3 Interactive Graphics

The first site is Here Here (http://herehere.co/nabes). The data is composed of reports about concerns to NYC’s 311 non-emergency system. They are trying to see how people can relate to these complaints. The interactive elements of the design of the site are the ability to share the info and also get involved. The site allows its audience to receive in-depth knowledge of the complaints and see how they can resolve the issues. The site has statistics as to how many complaints there were on a situation. One thing I like about the site is the fact that it is regularly updated. I would improve upon the design of the site by putting actual pictures of the locations as opposed to cartoons. The cartoon pictures on the site, has a kid element to it.

The site is Bloomberg Billionaires (http://www.bloomberg.com/billionaires/2013-01-22/aaa). The site is an interactive showing of the richest people ranked. The site allows users to see who is the richest, and they can click on the persons head to find out more information on them. You get to read the stories on these billionaires and can share it on social media. The interactive element of the design of the site allows you to change the rankings by different categories such as how much money their companies made in a day. It engages with its audience by allowing them to see where each billionaire is ranked in different categories and allowing them to share it on social media. It is effective because I love the site. I cannot find any flaws. I would improve upon the design of the site by putting pictures for every billionaire, and not just selected ones.

The last site is U.S. Gun Murders (http://guns.periscopic.com/?year=2013). The site allows you to check the cause of the gun murder victims in-depth for the years of 2010 and 2013. The site receives their information from the FBI website. What I found interesting about the site is that it gives you a future prediction on how that individual would have died late on in life. When I click on a victim’s name to find more information, a link to a website that originally reported the killing shows up. Secondly, the same victim’s future death is reported as either natural cause or deadly disease.

It engages with its audience by allowing them to see an innovative way to view statistics. The site allows you to go in-depth with gender, age group and region. I believe it was effective because it’s new and the source that they rely on is credible. I would improve upon the site the design by making it a different color than all black. It can be difficult to find information regarding victims, I would like for them to make it easier to find information. Lastly, and more importantly I think predicting how long someone would have lived had they not been killed is unfair to the families that lost them.
